LWA Donut Derby - Trexlertown, PA

Race Type: Unofficial race and donut eating competition
Conditions: Overcast and windy
Riders Representing: Kimberly Zubris

On Labor Day, Monday, September 3, 2012, Kimberly Zubris kitted up for an exciting recreational ‘race’ that combined bike riding skills with one’s ability to ingest as many Krispy Kreme’s as possible – the LWA Donut Derby!

The ‘race’ consisted of three major segments: 12 miles to the first donut stop, where all riders must dismount and eat as many donuts as they can take; another 12 miles of riding and a 2nd donut stop; and then a final ride in to the finish. Each donut consumed is worth a 3 minute ride time reduction – fastest time and most donuts eaten wins!

The competitive spirits were high on Monday and the race got off to a very fast start with the lead group averaging over 28mph towards the first donut stop. Kim held on with the second group on the road, coming into the first donut stop and eating 3 Krispy Kremes. She quickly realized that competitive eating was not her strong suit, so rode hard throughout the 2nd ride segment before quickly eating one more donut at the 2nd stop. The final leg of the ride was into a brutal headwind, but after picking up on the club team train of overall winner Frank Gonzales (32 donuts!), Kim had a fast ride into the finish.

With a total ride time of 1:56 and 4 donuts consumed, Kim’s final donut-adjusted time for the day was 1 hour 44 minutes, good enough for 2nd place medal in the Women 20-29 age group!
